2 Monkeypox Cases Confirmed… Public Health Emergency Declared

Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, has announced a public health emergency following the confirmation of two cases of Mpox in Sierra Leone. Addressing the nation under the Public Health Act, Dr. Demby stated, “Distinguished Members of the Press, Partners, and Citizens of Sierra Leone, the confirmation of two Mpox cases has necessitated immediate action. In consultation with His Excellency the President, Rtd. Brigadier Dr. Julius Maada Bio, I am officially declaring a public health emergency.”

Dr. Demby reaffirmed the government’s commitment to mobilizing resources, strengthening surveillance systems, and providing quality healthcare. He encouraged citizens to remain vigilant and to report any symptoms of Mpox by calling the free toll number, 117, or visiting the nearest health facility.

President Bio has endorsed the emergency declaration, stressing the importance of unity and compliance with health guidelines. “Our experiences with Ebola and COVID-19 have fortified our readiness to address emerging health threats,” Dr. Demby added.

This coordinated response underscores Sierra Leone’s determination to manage the Mpox outbreak effectively, with the support of its partners and the active participation of its citizens.
