Stats SL Engages Stakeholders on 2025 Decennial Population & Housing Census

Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL) has successfully engaged local and traditional authorities across the country in preparation for the 2025 Decennial Population and Housing Census. The nationwide engagement aimed to ensure the census is inclusive and people-centered, fostering collaboration among key stakeholders at regional and district levels.

The meetings, attended by Paramount Chiefs, Mayors, representatives from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), the Security Sector, Civil Society, youth groups, and the media, provided a comprehensive overview of the census process and its significance for national development. Additionally, the engagement emphasized the critical role of stakeholders in creating a smooth and cooperative environment for census activities.

A key highlight of the discussions was the establishment, review, and adoption of the Terms of Reference (ToR) for District Census Management Committees (DCMCs) across all 16 districts. These committees will play a crucial role in ensuring local ownership and oversight of census activities. Their responsibilities include monitoring census progress, conducting community sensitization campaigns, providing oversight for census management, resolving conflicts, and ensuring the security of census materials and data.

Speaking at the Western Area Rural District engagement in Waterloo, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Kenyeh Ballay, outlined the steps taken so far, including the formation of Advisory, Technical, and Publicity Committees at the national level. She also highlighted the visit of an international assessment team from the U.S. Census Bureau, UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), and UNFPA New York in January. Following their assessment, it was recommended that the census be rescheduled to December 2026 to allow for a more comprehensive and well-prepared process.

Stakeholders expressed confidence in the census process, commending Stats SL for its inclusive approach. They pledged their full support and committed to encouraging public participation to ensure a successful and accurate Decennial Population and Housing Census.

Stats SL remains committed to delivering a groundbreaking Digital Population and Housing Census for the people of Sierra Leone
