The Opposition Whip of the All People’s Congress (APC) in the Sixth Parliament of the Second Republic of Sierra Leone, Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara, has strongly criticized the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) for failing to address a deteriorating pothole especially near Ferry Junction and other major areas in Freetown.
Speaking during the 56th sitting of Parliament, Hon. Kamara commonly known as AKK expressed deep frustration over what he described as negligence and inaction by the SLRA, particularly regarding a major pothole located near the authority’s own offices.
“What started as a small hole has now expanded into what looks like a swamp,” Hon. Kamara lamented. “This is a major road used by thousands of Sierra Leoneans daily, including SLRA staff. Yet, no action has been taken to fix it.”
The lawmaker warned that the growing pothole poses a serious threat to public safety and could lead to a major disaster if not urgently repaired. He questioned the priorities of the SLRA, stating that the authority’s failure to address such a visible and dangerous issue near their headquarters is a clear sign of disregard for the public interest.
“It is unacceptable that SLRA workers pass by this road every day and ignore the damage, how we can trust them to maintain roads across the country if they can’t even fix the one next to their own office?” he asked.
Hon. Kamara called on the president and relevant authorities to immediately intervene and ensure the roads are repaired to prevent further deterioration and potential accidents.
The issue of road maintenance has long been a concern for residents of Freetown, who often face challenges navigating through poorly maintained infrastructure, especially during the rainy season. The Ferry Junction pothole has become symbolic of broader concerns about government responsiveness and accountability in public service delivery.
As pressure mounts on the SLRA, citizens and motorists alike are watching closely to see whether tangible steps will be taken to address the problem before it escalates further.
