Mr. Aruna Dumbuya, the Public Relations Officer of Rokel Commercial Bank, has emphasized the urgent need for cybersecurity awareness and education to tackle the rising threat of cyber fraud in the country. Speaking on AYV’s Wake Up Salone program, Dumbuya reiterated that public education is a critical tool in combating commercial fraud and safeguarding digital financial platforms.
Aruna, who is widely known as “The Banker’s Journalist,” explained that Rokel Commercial Bank has been proactive in addressing cybersecurity threats by organizing regular sensitization programs. He highlighted a major symposium held in February 2024, which brought together participants from all sectors of society including media institutions, universities, schools, the military, and the police.
“That symposium wasn’t limited to individuals from the public,” he said. “We engaged institutions, including AYV itself, and others from the security forces and educational establishments. The goal was to ensure a broad understanding of how cyber fraud works and how to prevent it.”
According to Aruna, the issue of cybercrime is not theoretical but a growing threat, especially for customers who are not digitally literate. He noted that many fraud cases occur when individuals unknowingly expose their digital banking credentials or leave their mobile phones unattended, giving fraudsters unauthorized access to sensitive financial services.
“Even at Rokel Commercial Bank, we have recorded instances of cybercrime, particularly affecting customers who are unaware of digital safety practices,” he said. “Some people compromise their own information or leave their devices open to third parties. Once that happens, fraudsters exploit the situation and gain access to the customer’s digital platform.”
Aruna Dumbuya stressed that while customers expect banks to always guarantee their financial safety, the responsibility must be shared through proper education and vigilance. He underscored the bank’s ongoing commitment to organizing community outreach and awareness campaigns.
“As a bank, we understand that trust and security are the cornerstones of customer confidence. That’s why we continue to engage the public, helping them understand how to protect themselves and their finances in this digital era,” he concluded.
