RSLAF Warns SLP

The Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) has issued a strong warning to the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) over the unauthorized and increasing use of military uniforms by police personnel.

In a press release dated 19th August 2025, addressed to all Regional Police Commanders (Regpols), Directors, Local Unit Commanders (LUCs), and Heads of Departments (HoDs), the RSLAF raised serious concerns about the growing trend of non-military individuals particularly members of the SLP wearing military fatigues and uniforms.

“I am directed to inform you that during one of the National Security Coordinating Group (NSCCG) meetings held at the Office of National Security (ONS), the leadership of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) expressed serious concern over the rampant use of military uniforms by non-members, including some personnel of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP),” the release stated.

The RSLAF emphasized that the improper use of military attire by police officers not only undermines the distinct identity of the armed forces but also poses serious security concerns, including the risk of impersonation and erosion of discipline within both services.

In response, the Office of the Inspector General of Police has been urged to sensitize all officers on the importance of wearing only the official police uniform. Police personnel are encouraged to take pride in their own uniforms and to strictly avoid donning military clothing; as such actions may lead to embarrassment, public confusion, and disciplinary sanctions.

“This directive should be treated with utmost importance,” the statement added.

Despite previous warnings, the misuse of military uniforms by SLP officers has become increasingly common in recent times, prompting this latest administrative directive.

The RSLAF has made it clear that it will not tolerate any further breaches and expects immediate compliance from the Sierra Leone Police. The public is also urged to report any such cases to the appropriate authorities.

The distinction between military and police roles must be maintained to preserve professionalism, order, and public trust in the security sector.
