The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Country Planning has announced its intention to take possession of all unoccupied lands within Newton-Songo and its surrounding areas, in accordance with the provisions of the Unoccupied Lands Act, Cap 117.
In a public notice issued by the Ministry, it was stated that the exercise will target lands described in a detailed boundary schedule, which has been attached to the official release. The move is part of an effort to formalize land ownership, promote development, and ensure proper land use planning in the region.
As part of the process, individuals or institutions who may have legitimate claims whether to part or all of the parcels of land deemed unoccupied are being urged to come forward. Claimants are required to submit valid proof of ownership or occupancy to the Deputy Director of Surveys and Lands. The submission window will be open from 1st September 2025 and will close on 28th February 2026.
The Ministry emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the process, advising all applicants to ensure they receive an official acknowledgement receipt upon submission of their documents. This will serve as proof that their claims have been received and are being considered.
Failure to submit such documentation within the specified period may result in the lands being officially declared as unoccupied and subsequently repossessed by the government.
This land reclamation initiative is expected to support ongoing efforts by the Ministry to improve urban planning, housing development, and equitable land distribution in growing peri-urban communities like Newton-Songo in the Western Area Urban.
Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to act promptly and ensure all necessary paperwork is duly submitted before the deadline.
