The Spanish Embassy ignited a fresh chapter in its relationship with Sierra Leone during a vibrant National Day celebration at Freetown’s Spar Hotel on October 15th, a gathering of government officials and dignitaries that served as a platform to honor shared history while also launching ambitious new joint initiatives.
His Excellency Ambassador Angel Carrascac, marking his fifth visit to the country, opened his remarks by celebrating the “excellent” state of bilateral relations. He pointed to thriving cooperation in diverse fields like tech startups, astronomy, security, and cultural exchange as proof of a dynamic partnership. “These projects deliver concrete benefits for both our peoples,” he stated, “and this is just the beginning.”
The Ambassador then shifted focus to global crises, applying Spain’s consistent diplomatic principles. On Gaza, he described a dire situation that has transcended a humanitarian crisis to become a “question of humanity.” He reaffirmed Spain’s early recognition of Palestine and argued that a recent ceasefire, while welcome, must be cemented with lasting justice and reconstruction. “History will judge those who remain silent,” he declared. “Spain is not silent.”
Echoing this commitment to international law, he firmly condemned Russia’s war in Ukraine, stating that any peace must reject the legitimization of violence or forced border changes.
Looking ahead, Ambassador Carrascac unveiled a suite of new projects designed to deepen ties. These include a novel Spanish Gastronomy and Food Security initiative, an upcoming “Startups Week” to empower young entrepreneurs and women, and expanded Spanish language training for Sierra Leone’s tourism industry. On migration, he pledged closer collaboration to fight human trafficking and create orderly pathways, framing migration as “a source of hope and opportunity, not fear.”
In his response, Acting Director General Mr. Momodu A. Wurie of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs echoed the collaborative spirit. He expressed profound gratitude for Spain’s steadfast support, notably during the Ebola crisis, and excitement for the newly announced ventures.
Mr. Wurie aligned Sierra Leone’s vision with Spain’s Africa strategy, emphasizing a shared goal of enhanced security, sustainable growth, and cultural exchange. On the world stage, he reiterated his nation’s firm stance on peace, calling for respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and urgent international action to address the crises in Gaza and climate change. He proudly highlighted Sierra Leone’s role in championing Africa’s voice in UN reforms.
Concluding his speech, Mr. Wurie reflected on a partnership that extends beyond formal diplomacy. “This is a productive friendship we are committed to growing,” he said, before inviting guests to raise a glass to Spain’s prosperity and the enduring bond between the two nations.
