Marampa Mining Under Fire for Broken Promises

Peace was shattered in Marampa Chiefdom as angry residents stormed the mining site operated by Marampa Minerals Limited (MML). The protest follows months of mounting frustration over what community members describe as broken promises, neglect, and disregard for local rights.

A close eyewitnesses reported that the demonstration began at dawn, with scores of residents demanding immediate action from the mining company. Protesters accused MML of failing to honor commitments made to local authorities and landowners, despite repeated assurances.

The situation has been compounded by severe flooding since June, which has devastated farmlands, destroyed roads, and deepened the suffering of already struggling households.

Community leaders say they have made numerous complaints to authorities, including the Resident Minister, AIG Northwest, Prosecutor General’s Office, National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), Ministry of Local Government, Office of National Security (ONS), and the Lunsar Police Division. However, they allege that little or no action has been taken to address their concerns

According to sources, on August 19, 2025, MML Managing Director Mr. Angola reportedly pledged to resolve the issues within one week, during a meeting witnessed by local authorities. Yet, nearly three months later, residents say no meaningful progress has been made.

“Our patience has run out,” said one community representative. “We have been treated as strangers on our own land. All we are asking for is respect, fairness, and what was promised to us.”

Community Demands, the protesting residents have outlined several key demands, including, respect for local authorities and landowners, immediate action to repair flood-damaged infrastructure.

Fulfilment of promises made by MML management, compensation for affected communities, adherence to international operational standards and dignified and respectful treatment of local residents

Community members are urging the government and relevant stakeholders to intervene and ensure that MML honours its commitments. They emphasize that they are not opposed to mining operations but demand that development should benefit all parties involved.

“The people of Marampa Chiefdom deserve to be treated as partners in progress, not as bystanders to their own development,” one elder remarked.

As of press time, the situation in Marampa remains tense, with residents vowing to continue their protest until their grievances are addressed. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the matter.

Effort has been made to speak with the company’s authority but proven futile.
