At the World Food Programme (WFP) Logistics Warehouse, Kissy Dockyard in Freetown, the Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL) through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS) in partnership with WFP, unveiled 2026/2027 School Feeding, made possible exclusively with locally produced 1,000 metric tons of rice, equivalent to about 20,000 bags of 50kg. The event was marked with theme, “From Salon Fama dem to skul pikin dem.”
Whilst doing the launching amidst other stakeholders of the UN family, Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, expressed appreciation over the partnership with WFP, admitting, such partnership has been very integral in achieving the Feed Salone Agenda, organizing and supporting farmers across the country.
With the 2026/27 School Feeding, the Minister disclosed that 250,000 children in 5 districts would benefit, and noted further that the event is very deliberate for all to see what government has achieved with the Feed Salone Agenda, committed to feeding the nation and putting money in the pockets of farmers. He assured that government would continue to provide the desired result to attract private sector investments.
In acknowledging the school feeding support, Conrad Sackey – Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) underscored the importance of school feeding, committed to addressing the issue of hunger with due consideration to our country’s fertile soil and the given capacity to deal with such a critical issue.
Minister Sackey re-echoed the wakeup call of His Excellency, President Julius Maada Bio – for our local farmers to feed our children with home-grown food and for us to start solving our problems as a nation.
He expressed appreciation for the locally produced food with the assurance that children would be in school on full stomachs and focused minds.
Andrew Odero – WFP Country Rep emphasized the significance of the 2026/27 home-grown school feeding year and that WFP has procured more than 1,000 metric tons of locally produced food which is about 20,000 bags of 50kg made possible by farmers across Sierra Leone.
He informed that WFP is aiming to procure at least 2,500 metric tons to be made possible with support from the Government of Sierra Leone and therefore, adding; such requires the expansion of reliable markets, supporting farmer organizations, increasing the quantity of locally planted food, and keeping the value generated by school feeding within the country’s economy.
