Africell Sierra Leone, in a bid to enhance digital inclusion nationwide, has partnered with Media Matters for Women (MMW) to deliver digital skills training to over 300 schoolgirls and female entrepreneurs in rural communities across Sierra Leone.
The initiative, known as the Digitruck Salone Project, is designed to improve digital literacy and inclusion across the country. Funded by Close the Gap through the Internet Society Foundation, the project features a 40-foot shipping container transformed into a solar-powered mobile classroom.
The mobile classroom has travelled to underserved areas including the Western Area Rural District, Bombali, and Kenema, delivering essential digital skills training to its beneficiaries.
According to Alinah Oliet Kallon, Manager of the Digitruck Salone Project, the initiative has so far benefited 308 schoolgirls and 31 female entrepreneurs.
“With the support of Africell and our other partners, we are achieving our goal of empowering girls with digital tools to enhance their education and helping women grow their businesses,” Kallon stated.
At a recent event, Africell’s Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Joe Abass Bangura, shared his personal journey from humble beginnings to a leadership role in corporate Sierra Leone. He highlighted the transformative power of education and technology, stating, “Every child has the potential to change their world. What they need is access and opportunity.”
Bangura commended MMW and its partners for their commitment to narrowing the digital divide. He reaffirmed Africell’s dedication to community development and youth empowerment, saying, “We believe in the power of partnerships to create meaningful change. Projects like Digitruck are not just about technology; they are about hope, growth, and a better future.”
Africell has consistently supported similar initiatives, including nationwide coding boot camps and mobile computer labs aimed at empowering young people.
As the Digitruck Salone Project continues to reach more local communities, Africell’s involvement remains a testament to its commitment to social impact and inclusive development in Sierra Leone.
