As they Embark on drainage cleaning… Moa Wharf Community Calls for Government Intervention

By Mutapha Dumbuya

The Moa Wharf community, located in the eastern part of Freetown, undertook an intensive drainage cleaning exercise on December 10, 2024.

This initiative was organized by the community headman, Manika Bangura, alongside other community stakeholders.

Residents of Moa Wharf have long suffered the consequences of waste being deposited into their drainage system by neighboring communities such as Fourth Bay Road, Paton Street, and those living uphill.

This persistent problem has resulted in recurrent flooding and significant damage to properties within the community.

Manika Bangura explained that for over 15 years, the community has been grappling with waste overflow entering their homes, particularly during heavy rains.

The drainage system, which runs through Paton Street, Fourth Bay Road, and Magazine before reaching Moa Wharf, has become a major source of distress for residents.

According to Mr. Bangura, the issue is not confined to the rainy season alone, as waste and plastic pollution cause blockages that affect the community year-round.

He emphasized the need for urgent intervention, calling on the government of President Julius Maada Bio, as well as non-governmental organizations, to help them address the situation.

Waste disposal and plastic pollution remain significant challenges in many Freetown communities, and Moa Wharf is no exception.

Residents hope for a lasting solution to mitigate the frequent flooding and its devastating impact on their lives and properties.
