The Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, His Excellency Wang Qing, has paid his first courtesy visit to the Honourable Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Komba Kamanda. During the visit, the Ambassador reaffirmed the Chinese government’s commitment to supporting the Judiciary in achieving its core objectives and values.
Speaking in the Chambers of the Chief Justice, Ambassador Wang emphasized the strong bilateral relations between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Sierra Leone, which date back to 1971. He highlighted his government’s readiness to assist the Judiciary whenever called upon.
The Ambassador explained that the purpose of his visit was to brief the Chief Justice on projects undertaken by the Chinese government in Sierra Leone and to strengthen goodwill between the Embassy and the Judiciary. He also referenced the Embassy’s recent launch of a book authored by Professor David Francis as a testament to the strong ties between the two nations, which encompass achievements in education, technology, investment, trade, and more.
Ambassador Wang expressed his appreciation for the warm reception he has received since arriving in Sierra Leone in January 2023. He commended the people of Sierra Leone for their friendliness and thanked the Chief Justice and the Judiciary’s leadership for the opportunity to enhance collaboration between the judicial systems of both countries.
In response, the Honourable Chief Justice outlined several areas where support from the Chinese government would be valuable, including infrastructure development, solar energy systems to improve power supply, capacity building for judges, magistrates, and senior staff, as well as the enhancement of technology and internet connectivity.
Justice Kamanda noted his intention to refurbish and electrify provincial courts with solar lighting or generators, establish an e-library, and implement other proposed developments, provided the necessary funding is secured.
He expressed gratitude to the government and people of China for the longstanding and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.
