Deadline for Western Rural Land Declarations Expires

By Ahmed papa kanu.

The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Country Planning has officially marked March 16, 2026, as the final deadline for individuals claiming ownership of land within the Western Rural District to submit valid documentation for verification.

This initiative, which began in 2025, specifically targeted land areas stretching from 4 Miles to 6 Miles, where increasing disputes and unclear ownership records have long posed challenges to development and planning. Members of the public particularly those asserting land ownership in these were strongly urged to present legitimate documents to the Ministry within a six-month grace period.

Over 1,100 Land Documents Submitted

According to information from the Ministry, more than 1,100 land documents have been received from various claimants. These submissions are currently undergoing a thorough review process. Officials have indicated that individuals who complied will be contacted and engaged as part of the verification and validation process.

Senior officials, including deputy directors from the Ministry, conducted field visits to the affected  where they met with key stakeholders and community leaders. During these engagements, they emphasized the importance of the exercise, clarified the six-month deadline, and outlined the consequences of non-compliance.

Unverified Lands to Be Declared State Property

The Ministry has made it clear that any individual or entity that failed or refused to submit land documentation within the stipulated period will have their claimed land classified as state land. This decision marks a significant step toward addressing longstanding land disputes and improving land governance in the Western Rural District.

Government’s Plan for Public Benefit

Sources close to the Professional Head and Director of Surveys and Lands, Tamba S. Dauda, have revealed that the reclaimed lands will be managed and utilized in the best interest of the people and the country.

Contrary to public concerns about political interference, the Ministry has assured that these lands will not be distributed along political lines. Instead, they will be allocated transparently, with a strong focus on national development priorities.

Focus on Industrial and Economic Growth

A key priority for the government is to make these lands available for industrial development, including the establishment of factories and other productive ventures. This move is expected to boost economic activity, create employment opportunities, and contribute to sustainable national growth.

Looking Ahead

As the Ministry continues its review and engagement process, attention now shifts to how effectively these lands will be redistributed and managed. Stakeholders and citizens alike are watching closely, as this initiative could reshape land ownership, urban planning, and economic development in the Western Rural District for years to come.

The government has reiterated its commitment to transparency, fairness, and development-driven land use, signaling a new chapter in land administration in the Western rural district.
