According to senior supporters of the All People’s Congress (APC), they believe that the June 24 elections were won by their presidential candidate, Dr. Samura Kamara. Many claim that Mr. Mohamed Konneh, the national returning officer, refused to declare Dr. Kamara as the winner of the election.
These actions by Mr. Konneh led the APC to choose not to participate in President Bio’s government. This situation prompted the call for the Bintumani Agreement, which eventually led to the APC participating in President Bio’s government.
After the signing of the agreement, the APC’s official spokesman informed the public that the 2023 elections were “done and dusted.” This statement raised concerns among some party members and supporters, leading them to question if the APC had compromised with the ruling government. Meanwhile, others continue to place their trust in Dr. Samura Kamara and still believe in electoral justice.
Many fear that if the APC cannot secure a victory in 2023, there will be no hope for 2028. Today, some of those who supported Dr. Samura Kamara are confused and unsure whether he will remain the APC flagbearer in the next general election. This has caused mixed feelings among both party members and supporters.
Dr. Samura remains steadfast in his fight for electoral justice, believing that victory must come for all Sierra Leoneans. In a recent speech, he described the country’s economy as being in a poor state, offering little hope for the people. He also criticized President Bio’s government, calling it incompetent for failing to provide basic amenities for the people of Sierra Leone.
Dr. Samura further stated that any government that attains power through electoral fraud will not survive in the long run. As the 2023 elections continue to stir emotions and doubts, the APC is left to navigate the uncertainty of the future, balancing the trust of its supporters with the challenges of the nation’s political landscape.
