Foundation Launches VSLA Initiative in Hill Cut Community

The Jamil and Nyanga Jaward Foundation has proudly expanded its Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) initiative to the Hill Cut community, one of Freetown’s most underserved areas. Officially launched yesterday by the foundation’s field team, this program is designed to empower widows by offering them opportunities to save, access small loans, and improve their livelihoods.

During the launch, field officers Cornelia Thompson and Solomon Temgbeh highlighted the program’s transformative impact. “This initiative has already changed lives in other communities,” shared Cornelia Thompson. “It’s about more than saving money—it’s about building a supportive network where widows can achieve financial independence and emotional resilience.”

Solomon Temgbeh emphasized the need for participants’ dedication: “We encourage you to fully commit to this program. Many widows have successfully started businesses, supported their families, and regained hope through this initiative.”

The community’s charlady warmly welcomed the foundation’s team and expressed heartfelt gratitude. “The Jamil and Nyanga Jaward Foundation is the only organization consistently supporting widows like us. Your help gives us hope, and we promise to actively participate in this initiative,” she said. She also offered prayers for the foundation’s continued growth and success, wishing it the strength to expand its reach and impact more lives.

Helena F. E. Dania, the community chief and a respected pastor, also attended the event. She encouraged widows to embrace the program wholeheartedly and commended the foundation’s efforts, describing the initiative as a blessing for the community. “This program has the power to transform lives. I urge all widows here to engage with it fully and make the most of this opportunity,” she remarked.

Following the launch, the widows began saving immediately, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Hill Cut. The VSLA initiative, already successful in other regions, continues to serve as a cornerstone of the foundation’s mission to uplift widows and disadvantaged women by equipping them with the tools to achieve sustainable livelihoods.

Through this expansion, the Jamil and Nyanga Jaward Foundation reaffirms its commitment to reducing inequality and empowering vulnerable communities across Freetown.
