Over $72M. For Tonko Limba Road construction… Residents Urge Deputy Speaker to Oversee project

Residents and Authorities in Tonko Limba, Kambia districts has asked Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh, the Sierra Leone’s  Deputy Speaker of Parliament and a native of Tonko Limba, to closely monitor the Tonko Limba Road construction project that has been sponsored by the IsDB to ensure its successful implementation.

Few weeks ago, the Board of Executive Directors of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) on the 14th October 2024, approved over $72 million in financing for the Kambia-Tonko Limba Road Construction Project in Sierra Leone. This project marks a significant step toward improving the country’s infrastructure and addressing longstanding concerns about the deteriorating state of the Kambia-Tonko Limba road.

The road project will greatly enhance transportation in Sierra Leone’s northern regions, benefiting both Kambia and Bombali districts. For years, the poor condition of the Kambia-Tonko Limba road has severely hindered transportation, especially during the rainy season when the road becomes virtually impassable. Previous governments made promises to rehabilitate the road but failed to deliver, leaving communities reliant on this route isolated and underserved.

This new road is expected to transform the region, especially for local farmers who depend on reliable transportation networks to bring their goods to market. Improved connectivity will allow farmers to transport their products more efficiently, boosting agricultural productivity and contributing to food security. The road will also facilitate regional trade by linking Kambia to other parts of the country and neighboring Guinea, opening new opportunities for economic growth.

The project is more than just a transportation upgrade; it is a critical component of broader socio-economic development in Sierra Leone’s northern regions. For decades, residents of Kambia and Tonko Limba chiefdoms have been deprived of essential services such as electricity, clean drinking water, and adequate road infrastructure. The approval of this financing brings renewed hope, as the new road is expected to improve access to services, stimulate job creation, and create economic opportunities for local businesses.

For the residents of Tonko Limba, one of the most neglected chiefdoms in Kambia district, this initiative is a long-overdue remedy to years of neglect. Improved infrastructure will enhance their quality of life and provide much-needed relief to the region’s struggling economy.

President Julius Maada Bio’s government has been commended for prioritizing infrastructure development in underserved areas. This project underscores his administration’s commitment to bridging infrastructure gaps and ensuring all Sierra Leoneans, particularly those in remote and marginalized communities, benefit from the country’s development efforts.

The Kambia-Tonko Limba road project represents a fresh start for the people of Tonko Limba and Kambia, promising better roads, improved access to essential services, and a brighter economic future.
