His Excellency Rtd. Brig. Dr. Julius Maada Bio hosted a crucial discussion with stakeholders at State House to address the Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Bill, a proposed legislation aimed at reducing maternal mortality in Sierra Leone.
During the meeting, President Bio acknowledged the diverse concerns rose by various groups, particularly by religious leaders, and emphasized the need for open dialogue. He encouraged all stakeholders, including members of Parliament, to engage in further consultations to ensure a balanced and inclusive approach to the bill.
“This bill is designed to address one of the key drivers of maternal mortality in our country. While concerns have been expressed, it is imperative that we work together to reach a consensus that prioritizes the health and well-being of our mothers and children,” His Excellency stated.
The president highlighted that maternal mortality remains a significant challenge in Sierra Leone, underscoring the urgency of collective action to protect and empower women. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating policies that enhance access to reproductive health services while respecting cultural and religious values.
The Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Bill seeks to improve maternal health outcomes by addressing gaps in healthcare delivery, expanding access to resources, and ensuring every woman has the opportunity to give birth safely.
President Bio’s call for collaboration signals his dedication to fostering unity and ensuring that all voices are heard as the nation tackles critical health issues. The dialogue is expected to pave the way for informed decision-making that will ultimately save lives and secure a healthier future for generations to come.
