SL–Guinea Border Tensions: BIB Calls for Unity, Peaceful Resolution

Dr. Ibrahim Bangura, a flagbearer aspirant of the All Peoples Congress (APC), has expressed deep concern over recent cross-border incidents involving Guinean military forces and personnel of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) in Falaba, including developments in Yenga.

In a press statement issued in Freetown on 25th February 2026, Dr. Bangura described reports of confrontations and the alleged capture of Sierra Leonean military personnel as troubling, noting that the situation requires urgent and strategic attention.

He reaffirmed his solidarity with the State and members of the Armed Forces, commending their professionalism and commitment to defending the country’s territorial integrity. According to him, the sovereignty of Sierra Leone is “sacred and non-negotiable,” stressing that national borders must be respected and the country’s dignity upheld.

Dr. Bangura underscored the importance of national unity at what he termed a critical moment for national security, pledging his willingness to work with his party, the Government, and other stakeholders to ensure the matter is addressed decisively, strategically, and peacefully in the national interest.

He also reminded authorities in Republic of Guinea of the long-standing historical and cultural ties between the two nations, highlighting Guinea’s support to Sierra Leone during the civil war, when it provided refuge to thousands of Sierra Leoneans.

The APC aspirant warned that incidents along the shared border, particularly in Yenga, risk undermining decades of regional cooperation and mutual trust. He urged Guinean authorities to halt any actions that could escalate tensions, respect established boundaries, and engage in constructive diplomatic and bilateral dialogue to resolve outstanding issues.

Dr. Bangura further called on Sierra Leoneans to remain calm and united, urging citizens to support state institutions while advocating for a just, peaceful, and dignified resolution to the border dispute.
