In a groundbreaking healthcare initiative aimed at improving the well-being of police officers, their families, and surrounding communities, the Surgeon in Action Foundation, in collaboration with Kingtom Police Hospital in Freetown, has launched a free surgical campaign. The program commenced on November 22, 2024, with patient screenings led by Dr. John Mumuneh Konteh, Medical Superintendent of the Kingtom Police Hospital.
The screening phase, which involves individuals from various regions, is designed to assess patients’ medical conditions and determine their eligibility for surgery. Surgeries are scheduled to begin on Saturday, November 23, 2024. Patients whose conditions do not require surgical intervention will receive alternative medical advice. Dr. Konteh highlighted the hospital’s commitment to transparency and accountability, ensuring equitable access to healthcare.
“All police health facilities across the regions have been given equal opportunities to benefit from this initiative,” Dr. Konteh emphasized, noting that all procedures, including surgeries, will be entirely free of charge.
The campaign has received strong support from the Inspector General of Police, who has championed improved healthcare for police personnel. Efforts include expanding health facilities in regions with significant police presence to reduce long-distance travel for medical services.
The Kingtom Police Hospital has undergone significant upgrades, evolving into a teaching health center where medical students receive hands-on training and mentorship. The hospital now conducts 95% of medical examinations for police officers deployed on peacekeeping missions, showcasing its advanced diagnostic capabilities.
This year’s campaign features pediatric specialists from Spain, ensuring that children in the community also benefit. Additionally, the Surgeon in Action Foundation, in partnership with the CR Bisturi Solidario Foundation from Spain, has donated a state-of-the-art anesthesia machine valued at over $50,000 USD.
Dr. Konteh detailed its advanced capabilities, including precise delivery of anesthetic agents, ventilation support, comprehensive monitoring, and a scavenging system for safe waste gas disposal. He noted that the machine will significantly enhance patient safety and comfort, enabling successful surgical outcomes.
