In a significant step toward strengthening sustainable development efforts, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sierra Leone through its Resident Representative Mr. Fredrick Ampiah, has engaged in high-level discussions with the Commissioner General of the National Revenue Authority (NRA), Mrs. Jeneba Kpakanya Bangura. The meeting aimed to reinforce collaboration in mobilizing domestic resources to finance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
At the heart of the dialogue were strategic initiatives focused on aligning Sierra Leone’s tax systems with the SDGs. Key areas of discussion included tax reforms that support sustainable growth, carbon pricing mechanisms and the development of greener revenue strategies. These reforms aim to create a more resilient and inclusive economic framework that aligns with the country’s commitment to climate action and equitable development.
The meeting also highlighted the innovative Block Management System, an initiative by the NRA to expand access to tax services, particularly for underserved communities and small businesses. By bringing tax services closer to the people, the system is designed to improve compliance, enhance revenue collection and foster trust between citizens and tax authorities.
Mr. Ampiah reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s vision of sustainable development through technical assistance, capacity building, and policy dialogue. He emphasized that innovative and inclusive financing is critical to achieving long-term development outcomes, especially in the context of climate change and economic recovery.
Commissioner General Mrs. Bangura expressed appreciation for the continued support from UNDP and reiterated NRA’s dedication to modernizing tax administration and ensuring that fiscal policies contribute to environmental sustainability and social equity.
This partnership underscores the growing importance of integrated development financing and the need for collaborative approaches to meet both national and global development targets.
Together, UNDP and the NRA are charting a course toward a more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous future for all Sierra Leoneans
