Without Youth, No Future for Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is facing one of its most troubling social crises in recent years the rise and spread of the deadly drug known as Kush. This dangerous substance has become a silent killer, destroying the lives and futures of many young people across the country. Kush brings no benefit to the human body; instead, it weakens, destroys, and ultimately kills.

The alarming rate at which our youth are dying calls for urgent national concern. It is not just a problem for families or communities but a national emergency that threatens the very foundation of Sierra Leone’s future. Without the youth, there can be no future for this nation. The government, especially the country’s security and health sectors, must treat this situation as a top priority.

The fight against drug abuse and trafficking in Sierra Leone rests largely in the hands of the country’s security apparatus particularly the Sierra Leone Police, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and the Immigration Department. These institutions have the constitutional authority and moral responsibility to protect citizens and prevent crimes. However, serious questions are being asked by concerned Sierra Leoneans: Are these security institutions truly committed and equipped to fight the drug menace?

Public accusations have surfaced, alleging that some members of the security forces are themselves involved in the smuggling and distribution of drugs, including Kush. Such allegations are deeply troubling. They raise doubts about the credibility of the very agencies meant to lead this critical fight. If corruption and complicity exist within the ranks of law enforcement, then the battle against drugs will remain an uphill struggle.

Moreover, the issue of drug inflow into Sierra Leone is no longer a secret. International media outlets have repeatedly criticized the government for allegedly harbouring known drug traffickers, such as Jos Leijdekkers (alias Umaru Sheriff). Across the West African subregion, arrests of major drug smugglers have been made, often revealing links to Sierra Leone as a transit point. This reputation not only damages our international image but also undermines national security.

Recent incidents, such as the mysterious yacht that reportedly entered Sierra Leone’s waters without proper security clearance, highlight the weaknesses in our border control and maritime surveillance systems. Such breaches expose the country to further illegal activities, including drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and human trafficking.

It is therefore imperative for the government of Sierra Leone, in collaboration with the security sectors, to implement strong and effective measures. A robust national strategy should be developed to tighten border security, improve intelligence sharing, and ensure accountability among law enforcement officers. At the same time, public awareness campaigns and rehabilitation programs must be expanded to help victims and educate the youth about the dangers of drug abuse.

Sierra Leone cannot afford to lose its young generation to drugs. The youth are the backbone of the nation its strength, its hope, and its future. Without them, Sierra Leone’s dreams of development and progress will remain unfulfilled. The time for action is now. Reach out at vantagenewspaper@gmail.com.
