World Bank Director Assesses Progress at Leicester Peak & Tacugama

Accompanied by a team from the World Bank Sierra Leone office, World Bank Division Director for Sierra Leone, Ghana, and Liberia, Robert Taliercio O’Brien, conducted his first assessment of the SLeDEP-funded construction site at Leicester Peak.

Upon arrival, he was warmly welcomed by the Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Farida Tunis, who provided an in-depth briefing on the facilities currently under construction.

Leicester Peak is one of several protected areas undergoing significant transformation aimed at expanding market access, enhancing the quality of tourism products and services, and positioning Sierra Leone as a premier tourism destination.

Situated at the peak of the Western Area Peninsula, the site is an engineering marvel. Although still under construction, its superior architectural design and structural integrity are evident, ensuring a sense of security for both local and international tourists.

Following his inspection, the Division Director expressed his admiration for the remarkable progress made, acknowledging the complexity of the work and commending the Ministry of Tourism, the World Bank, and other key stakeholders for their strong collaboration.

His visit highlights the power of partnerships in driving transformational change, particularly in advancing Sierra Leone’s tourism sector.

Director O’Brien was accompanied by the Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, along with other government officials.

Minister Nabeela   Tunis has been instrumental in ensuring that Sierra Leone’s tourism sector continues to improve and meets international standards.
