Alhaji Mohamed Kamara, a former military officer, made his first appearance before Magistrate Santigie Bangura at Pademba Road Court No. 2. He stands accused of making inciting statements aimed at undermining the peace and security of Sierra Leone.
Kamara was arraigned on a single charge of incitement, contrary to law.
According to the indictment, on Saturday, 19 October 2024, in Freetown, Kamara allegedly made statements intended to incite unrest and threaten the stability of the nation. It is further alleged that he claimed the government, led by President Julius Maada Bio, had killed most of those detained at the Freetown Correctional Center following the August 10, 2023 protests. He also reportedly stated that President Bio did not legitimately win the June 24, 2023 presidential election and suggested that an overthrow of the government would be inevitable.
After the charges were read and explained to him, Kamara pleaded not guilty.
The police prosecutor, Detective Superintendent of Police Sorie Conteh, requested an adjournment, citing the absence of witnesses in court.
The accused, who was unrepresented, did not have a bail application submitted on his behalf. As a result, he was remanded in custody.
The case was adjourned to 25 November 2024 for further hearing.
