Upon arriving in Sierra Leone, 46-year-old Mr. Sander from the Netherlands continues his remarkable journey across continents—on two wheels. A passionate cyclist since childhood, Mr. Sander has turned his love for cycling into a lifestyle, traveling from country to country on his bicycle. Over the past two months, he has been steadily riding through Africa, inspiring many with his determination and resilience.
In an exclusive interview, Mr. Sander shared his incredible story, emphasizing how cycling has shaped his life. “I grew up riding bikes, and as an adult, cycling keeps me fit and adventurous,” he said. “Traveling long distances by bike is tough at first, but with time, it becomes second nature. Even if you’re not in top shape, it’s still possible to cover significant distances.”
Mr. Sander’s Odyssey has taken him through 15 countries across Africa and Asia. Starting in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, he made his way through Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, Mauritania, and Morocco. From there, he plans to continue through Spain and France, eventually returning to the Netherlands.
Although not in peak physical condition when he began, Mr. Sander’s grit and experience carried him through. “When I started, I wasn’t in the best shape but could still manage 60 miles a day. One day, I pushed myself and covered 62 miles in just under four hours,” he recounted.
The journey hasn’t been without challenges. Roads in Liberia, for example, proved particularly tough. Yet, Mr. Sander has adapted, focusing on consistent pacing, regular hydration, and proper nutrition to maintain his stamina. “Cycling is all about rhythm. You need to eat every few hours, stay hydrated, and avoid long breaks that make your muscles stiff,” he explained.
Packing light has also been crucial. “I carry only a few changes of clothes, a travel hammock for camping, and about two days’ worth of food. Maintaining the bike is just as important, so I travel with spare tubes, tools, and a reliable pump. A cheap pump can ruin your day if it doesn’t work properly,” he warned.
For long-distance cyclists, Mr. Sander recommends investing in a comfortable saddle or a gel seat cushion. “This journey has been incredible,” he reflected. “It’s not always easy, but the rewards of adventure, meeting people, and exploring new places make it all worthwhile.”
Mr. Sander’s transcontinental journey is not just a tale of exploration; it’s a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and the joys of discovering the world on two wheels.
