Government Negligence: $20M Funding Pulled from ‘Salone’

In a recent local television interview, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, the Mayor of Freetown, revealed that in 2020 the World Bank committed $20 million in funding to relocate the Kingtom and Bomeh dumpsites at Ferry Junction in Freetown.

According to the Mayor, the Bomeh dumpsite has existed for many years but lacks the essential features and infrastructure that a proper waste management facility should have. With Freetown’s rapidly growing population, the site has become too small, resulting in overflowing waste that now affects nearby streets and neighbourhoods.

The World Bank’s only requirement was for the Government of Sierra Leone to provide 10 acres of land for the relocation project. A suitable site was identified in Hastings, in the Western Area Rural District. However, the land-owned by the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF)—was never officially transferred, as the necessary documentation was not provided.

As a result, the World Bank withdrew its funding in 2024.

This development highlights a serious case of government negligence. It is deeply disappointing and frustrating when crucial developmental projects, especially those intended to benefit the capital city, are sidelined due to administrative inaction.
