MCC Authority meets government

At a high-level meeting with Government officials, the Acting Managing Director of the Department of Compact Operations, Madam Carrie Monahan, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the MCC, citing the establishment of the Millennium Challenge Authority – Sierra Leone and the discussions on the critical mineral agreement.

She urged the Government to fulfil its contribution to the Compact for the signing of the Entry into Force agreement. The Honourable Minister of Finance, Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura, thanked the MCC for the continued engagement and echoed the Government’s commitment to the Compact implementation.

Minister Bangura informed the Acting Managing Director that the Government is implementing critical reforms in the energy sector, including establishing a Collection Account and enabling private sector participation in energy distribution to improve the financial and operational performance of the electricity sector.  In addition, he noted that the cabinet had approved the proposal for the Government to join the Africa Trade and Investment Development Insurance (ATIDI), which will facilitate inward investment in Africa by providing insurance against trade and investment risks.

The Director, Department of Policy and Evaluation, Madam Naureen Haque, lauded the Government for the scorecard’s performance and encouraged the Government to continue with reforms, especially in economic freedom, electoral reforms, and national unity.

Minister Bangura explained that the Government is fully committed to engaging all stakeholders in the implementation of electoral reforms and the national unity agreement.

The Acting Managing Director said Sierra Leone is a real success story of the MCC and appreciated the deep engagement with the Government.

The Hon. Minister of Finance was accompanied by the Minister of Energy, Mr. Cyril Grant, Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the United States of America, Mr. Amara Sowa, Financial Secretary, Mr. Matthew Dingie, Governor of the Bank of Sierra Leone, Dr. Ibrahim Stevens, Chief Economist at the Ministry of Finance, Mr. Alimamy Bangura and Technical Adviser to the Minister of Finance, Dr. Franklin Sisabu Bendu
