In a landmark meeting convened to address Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, thanked all stakeholders for their continued efforts in supporting President Julius Maada Bio’s vision of a more just, inclusive, and equitable society. He emphasized the need for unity in combating resistance to progress and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling SGBV and child protection.
Dr. Sengeh highlighted that while progress has been made, persistent challenges and harmful practices continue to undermine efforts. He stressed that social protection is a fundamental right, not a luxury, and must be accessible to all, enabling a society free from violence, fear, and discrimination.
Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Dr. Isata Mahoi, detailed the Ministry’s strides, including the implementation of the National Male Involvement Strategy, establishment of One Stop Centres, and critical legislation like the GEWE Act and Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. She acknowledged the ongoing challenges and outlined the Ministry’s priorities for 2026, focusing on legislative reviews, expanded services, and enhanced accountability mechanisms.
The Presidential Adviser on Gender, Madam Isatu Jabbie Kabbah, outlined the meeting’s purpose – to unify government, civil society, and development partners in strengthening Sierra Leone’s response to SGBV. The forum also focused on preparing for the 1,000-Man Conference aimed at engaging men and boys as allies in ending violence.
This meeting marks a crucial step in advancing Sierra Leone’s “Big Five” game-changer initiatives, ensuring continued momentum toward eradicating SGBV and creating safer, more equitable communities for all.
