The Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, has emphasized the indispensable role of the media in strengthening democracy and national development, noting that no serious society can function effectively without a vibrant and responsible press.
Minister Bah made this statement during an engagement between Orange Sierra Leone Ltd. and members of the media held at the Orange Digital Center, Hill Station, Freetown, on 6th February 2026. He commended Orange Sierra Leone for fostering a strong working relationship with the media and for expanding telecommunications coverage across the country, particularly in remote and underserved communities.
According to the Minister, access to communication services plays a critical role in national transformation, as it enhances information flow, supports economic growth, and connects citizens to opportunities. He praised Orange Sierra Leone for its continued investment in network expansion and digital development initiatives, which he said contribute significantly to bridging the digital divide in Sierra Leone.
Minister Bah further underscored the importance of the media as a key institution in society, stating that journalists help shape national narratives, promote accountability, and encourage citizen participation in governance. He noted that a strong partnership between corporate institutions and the media is essential in ensuring that development efforts and public-interest initiatives reach the wider population.
He concluded by encouraging continued collaboration between the telecommunications sector and the media, stressing that responsible reporting and open access to information remain vital pillars for building a stronger, more informed, and progressive society.
