A young man identified as Mohamed Sawaneh, a resident of 1 Hillstation Damaya Road in Freetown, is currently on the run following allegations of involvement in a same-sex relationship.
According to reports, Sawaneh residence was raided by a group of unidentified individuals his home amid growing suspicions about his private life. His alleged partner, identified as Emmanuel, is also reportedly in hiding.
Sources claim Emmanuel was earlier apprehended on the 14th March, 2026 by a group of individuals, severely beaten, and left in critical condition.
There are growing concerns for Sawaneh’s safety, as threats have reportedly been made against his life.
On the 16th March after his boyfriend was apprehended, a rugged group within the community have allegedly vowed to attack him if he is found.
A close source disclosed that many of Sawaneh’s friends were unaware of the allegations, expressing shock over the situation.
However, other sources claim he had been secretly involved in such activities for several years.
A close source revealed to this medium that Sawaneh is believed to come from a strong Muslim background and would not be expected to engage in such acts.
It was also confirmed that his family has reportedly disowned him.
Sierra Leone remains a largely conservative society, where same-sex relationships are widely viewed as socially and culturally unacceptable.
Under the country’s legal framework, male same-sex sexual acts are criminalized under the colonial-era Offences Against the Person Act of 1861, which is still in force.
Human rights observers have long noted that the existence of such laws contributes to stigma, discrimination, and, in some cases, violence against individuals perceived to be part of the LGBTQ+ community.
Meanwhile, authorities have confirmed that investigations into the matter are ongoing.
Police have reportedly issued a warrant for Sawaneh’s arrest, and his way about is unknown.
