The recent decision by the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), under the leadership of Babadi Kamara, to dismiss Mohamed Kallon as head coach of the Sierra Leone men’s national team has sparked widespread debate across the country’s football community.
The move, which came as a surprise to many football loving fans, is being described by several stakeholders and fans as ill-timed and poorly handled. Critics argue that the decision reflects deeper issues within the current administration and raises serious concerns about professionalism and governance within the SLFA.
In the days following Kallon’s dismissal, reactions from fans and football observers have been largely critical. Some football supporters believe that since Babadi Kamara assumed office, the football landscape in Sierra Leone has been marked by persistent disputes and a lack of unity.
According to some stakeholders, the football family has experienced continuous internal conflicts, just after the elective congress that was held in Port Loko, ranging from administrative disagreements to legal battles. The SLFA has reportedly been involved in multiple cases at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), a situation that critics say undermines the stability and credibility of football governance in the country.
The current administration has also been compared to that of former SLFA leader Thomas Daddy Brima. Supporters of Brima argue that his tenure was characterized by relative peace, unity, and active football engagement across the nation.
They recall a period when football activities were more widespread, with matches played across all regions of the country, alongside stronger international participation. In contrast, some believe the current era has been dominated by disputes and administrative challenges.
Concerns over governance are not new. Before the SLFA elections, tensions reportedly arose when certain candidates were prevented from contesting. One notable case involved Aminata Bangura, whose candidacy was initially disqualified by an SLFA committee.
Her legal team challenged the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which ultimately ruled in her favor, declaring her eligible to contest. This incident further fueled perceptions among some observers that the electoral process might lacked fairness and transparency.
Since assuming office on August 2, 2025, Babadi Kamara’s leadership has been consistently surrounded by controversy, according to critics. Allegations of constitutional breaches and administrative inefficiencies continue to dominate discussions among football fans.
The dismissal of Mohamed Kallon has only intensified scrutiny. Kallon, widely regarded as one of Sierra Leone’s most respected football figures, enjoys immense popularity among fans. Many view him as one of the most qualified and experienced individuals to lead the national team, the Leone Stars.
For many supporters, Kallon’s removal is more than just a coaching change, it represents a deeper disconnect between the SLFA leadership and the football community. His legacy as both a player and coach has earned him admiration nationwide, making the decision particularly sensitive.
As debates continue, stakeholders are calling for greater transparency, accountability, and unity within the SLFA. Many believe that restoring trust in the football system will require meaningful reforms and a renewed commitment to professionalism.
