The Speaker of Parliament, Hon Segepoh Solomon Thomas, has revealed in his chamber, in the Well of Parliament, that some staff of the Orange Sierra Leone are scammers using Orange money numbers.
According to the speaker, members of the public have expressed frustration over 419ners using Orange as the only mobile company to defrauding citizens. “Why always orange mobile”
The allegations came after the opposition Chief Whip Hon Abdul Karim Kamara (AKK), stood in the Well of Parliament under the Standing Order (SO) 23 complaining fraudsters using Orange money numbers to scam the people.
He said scammers hack the WhatsApp accounts of your friends or family, messaging you to urgently send Orange Money for an emergency. Always call the person directly on a known number to verify.
What is more painful, Hon Abdul Karim Kamara outline is that most of those scaming Sierra Leoneans are using registered Orange Sim cards.
He said someone was scammed and he was sent a message to send money and funningly he decided to send Le30 to know whether the number is registered.
He went on that, the number used was registered, and it is painful to see a whole mobile company failing to protect citizens and can not track down those scammers.
“Why always orange money, Why not Africell and other companies?” he stated.
He revealed that Orange Money scammers frequently target users by hacking WhatsApp accounts, impersonating customer service representatives, or pretending to be distressed family members to solicit money.
In other to ensure scrutiny regarding this frustration among citizens, the Speaker of Parliament, Hon Segepoh Solomon Thomas has ordered the Clerk of Parliament to summon the Minister of Information, NaTCA, Orange Sierra Leone Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and head of Cyber Unit in the Well of Parliament in the next adjourned on Tuesday 28 July 2026.
The summon is to answer questions regarding the fraudulent activities of Orange Sierra Leone.
However, the decision attracts interest from all members of parliament and urges to tackle these scammers using Orange money numbers.
